Mouth odor is an unpleasant smell which emanates from the mouth. Many people are suffering from this condition today without knowing the cause or how to avoid it. Bad breath is very intimidating because it tends to repel people from you. In this article, we're going to be discussing five causes of mouth odor and some foods you need to eat when suffering from this condition.

1. Food.

The foods we eat can have a huge effect on our smell. Foods such as garlic and onions are known to cause bad breath because they contain sulfur compounds, which gives them a distinctive smell. We are advised to brush our mouth immediately after eating because it helps to prevent the build up of certain bacteria which are capable of causing bad breath.

2. Mouth dehydration.

We are advised to always keep our mouth hydrated because saliva plays a very significant role in cleansing the mouth. When the mouth is dry, it becomes easier for odors to build up.

3. Diseases.

Mouth odor can be as a result of some underlying medical conditions such as cancer, liver failure, ulcer, etc. It is advisable to visit a dentist whenever you start experiencing symptoms of mouth odor to know the exact cause. 

4. Poor dental hygiene.

Failure to brush your teeth could lead to mouth odor. Dental health should be taken seriously because failure to do that could lead to bad breath. Brushing your teeth for at least twice a day ensures that you never develop mouth odor.

5. Drugs.

Mouth odor can also be caused by the medications we take. Some drugs such as sedatives, diuretics, amphetamines and others tend to dry out the mouth, thus leading to mouth odor.

1. Green tea.


Green tea contains catechins, a natural antioxidant which helps to combat bad-breath-causing-bacteria.

2. Sugar free chewing gum.


When you eat chewing gum. Food particles and dead cells gets removed from your teeth, and bacteria finds it hard to multiply in that environment. You are advised to go for sugar free chewing gums because they're more effective.

3. Raw fruits and vegetables.


Certain vegetables and fruits such as carrots, apples, pears and celery helps in saliva production thus preventing bad breath.

4. Water.


Water helps to keep the mouth hydrated, it also makes the mouth uninhabitable for bad-breath-causing-organisms.



6-gingerol is a compound that is found in ginger, it activates an enzyme in the saliva which helps to break down sulfur compounds.
